GODS

The gods today all live in mountainous lands or

in the dark of inhuman emptinesses.

Reaping their harvests of ready souls,

they are powerless to die. Their mournful

faces hover above the abysses,

unsettling banks of bashful clouds

and the serenity of the great waters.

Ages roll by, and in the infinite moment

with burnt incense and theocalla ashes,

with flowers, blood, lampions and beeswax

they impassionately stuff

the fathomless funnels of their ears

and then sleep, and then are dreamed,

drifting mistlike through the dark

and turning their faces toward their world.

ANOTHER DAY

Another day without you here,

dragging myself through fated furrows

like a blind worm. Another day

unhurriedly drinking the thick pain,

the heady mead of partings. Another day

that holds you as a stone holds a sound and a tree

a tear in its hidden heart. Another day,

more bitter than the one before, that I wipe the dust

from things remembered. Another day

that your face is alive like a burning memory

of mere trifles… Another day –

of a far-reaching gaze, a path in Pavlovsk,

of fragility, guilt, winter. Another day

be damned! I love you like a soul

departed and fond earthly remains. Another day

dies without bringing you back to me, or me

to you, and casts me into the night, as if into a ditch.

I

FOREIGN CEMETERY

I

In the twilight of a November morning

I skid awkwardly along the ice and squint

at the glassy still-green branches,

at the sweat of the windows, and bewildered feet

scurrying slantwise.

Behind the rusted railing

swollen gravestones rise. The older ones huddle

numb with cold against the brown walls. All last night

a heavy snow fell. Today it’s melting. Tell me,

what are we doing in this quilted world?

II

II

On a spring day beneath a flood of clouds

let’s break away and go skittering with the squirrels

among the gravestones! Though maybe not

some country churchyard where a moaning outcast

might come to put a bullet in his head

upon the mound beneath which his mother lies; or

where one might trace in earnest Atlantises of cloud

or meet at the crack of dawn anything

other than wet runners

(death trailing behind at a jog-trot), still there is

no place more alive. And it is right, my God of springtide,

that this foreign land should smart so.

III

III

And whispering in the snowy twilight,

I weave my tracks again around the welcoming

graves. My Russian fate,

without permission, without rhyme, has granted me silence.

A foreign land has etched for me words yet unlearned,

and now, whispering in the snowy twilight,

the epithets of those cut down through the years drift up

from the brittle stones: his wife, their son. The snow

drives them in, bringing them home to me, to you,

though you scarcely have need of them now.

There’s no one here. Or rather: soul upon soul,

flickering like a candle, drifts across my path

at twilight, without a whisper in the snow.

A REPRESENTATION OF THE AUTHOR

But I am the seed of another land. Astray there, the armada,

unamazed, sees glittering in the harbor

a scarlet throng of kings and queens come to greet them; or

pages rushing forward in the waves of their mantles, tripping

one over the other, their eyes glued to the ermine train.

It is a land filled with palaces, every palace encircled

by a park, where each is welcomed by the kings and

queens with their court. And afterwards, intoxicated,

each is released into a valley where winds carry his captured glance

and a rotting trunk warms his back – until a drifting hand runs

its fingers through his curls, across his delicate eyelids, over the years.

And seeing deception nowhere, you see that everything has a purpose.

Lost there, the armada lay down in the coral forest…

But even I could never deceive one whose faith was easily shaken.

A CAPTAIN’S GRAVE

John Bradley, captain – he is dead, an ever sailing soul.

And matters not the yew behind , when comes a sudden hush

to raise the dust upon the ship.

How easy then it is to see, within the blowing wind,

those locks on brow and shoulders broad. Is there another like?

Whose lot but his with rugged soul to steer thus evermore the clouds

from break of day till dusk!

John Bradley, captain – heart afire: a ship above the name.

Full eighty winters long he lived, and still another spring,

until the day the ships depart, that day he sailed away,

and left behind the fleshly depths, alone

now, utterly. Wind at his back. But lo, a wave! –

across and through it comes. And down again.

The sail – it’s he,

John Bradley, captain of the stars. When comes the sudden hush,

already then, not turning round, the sailors all do know

that must they mighty labors steer along that other wind.

And in their locks lie thick the stars –

on brow and shoulders broad,

and in their eyes, the misty fields that filled our childhood dreams.

And thus began the first:

John Bradley, captain ever young… But drowning winds arose.

And loud the stirring chorus rang, from still, unopened lips.

TO EDITH

And the air does not rush in at once to fill the distance

separating us, and all day long tears thick as resin

well within my breast. And so with every year

we see the clumsy dance grow clumsier still, and hands

we pull from clinging hands – more obedient we than

well-taught children. The time has come for us to learn

to live amid the crash of shutters in the wind,

amid the emptiness – of melodies played out,

for which the roses of returning, O my blessed

and fragile friend, are no longer enough.

тела, а юношей смуглят в глазах обеты;

и слава рваная в гортанных слёзах фадо;

LISBON

This town, where everything seems to run up

and down, round corners, sideways, down dead ends,

pell-mell, through hoops, all mad and skewed –

intertwining, intersecting, overflowing in a rush

to the Tajo; where girls still haven’t dreamed how

to blush, and women of a certain age are black

and passionately pious; where men wear bodies

still-young, and youths grow dusky with the promise in their eyes;

where it smells of slippery fishes’ silver

and octopuses gleam in wooden crates,

where a shaky boat is called Thunder of the Seas,

where martial rumble and guitar-moon honey

and tattered glory fill the fado’s throaty tears;

where the inescapable tangle of Alfama’s twisting lanes

blissfully entwines,

where a breeze cools the sun in harsh caresses –

this town I did not build behind closed eyes

in happy dreams.

ESCORIAL

Escorial, as if from the soul, opens its gates again,

though day does not drift away behind us nor the cries of birds dwindle down.

Against the sky, mountain forests flow together in gentle waves

and we can almost feel the distant ocean – until the bolts

come crashing down, until the walls rise up higher

than any other icy wall, until the emptiness

swallows up our unwelcome footfalls.

Escorial,

like a path of judgment, starts with a monstrous cathedral.

Steep ribs – of cliffs or walls? – soar up straight

from the underworld. And there, in dusky heights above,

a splash of vestment swirls in a colorful, frenzied

boil: green, scarlet, foolish azure and rose

and heavenly cornflower blue.

Now, stumbling down the sloping

stairs (how it draws us, this ice-hole!) – down to where the torches

thicken the blackness, where three hollow coffins lie

on lion paws – amidst unempty coffins,

coffins, coffins. “The days have dwindled. And there is nothing,

nothing, nothing that can save us…” And: “How blessed is he

who here has been granted a worthy spouse.”

Infante, infanta – children of Leonora: they who were born

dead have no name. And the empty pits for a dozen

generations bear no epitaphs or arms.

And there

upon a marble pillow – half-closed eyes.

Fused fingers cannot grip the sword… Farewell,

Don Juan of Austria. I do not know how to die.

But you of these shadows where you cannot sleep, moonbrowed

Duke, will not drift from my dream in that hour when

the gates are opened wide of my soul’s Escorial.

TO MY FRIENDS

And even those on whose lips my

name has grown cold, you all are with me in this

moment – transparent brows against the glass. So

many useless years since

you and I fell headlong

into silence, yet the night snow upon my

window aches for us as if you might still be true

to words unspoken, as

if I might betray

a thing at no cost, as

if the barren winter might forgive

us at once our fate and

our confusion – for the sake of our eyes lashed together

in a midnight snowfall.

* * *

* * *

Outside my window a willow tree waves its

ragged darkness, as if underwater.

Two days of rain and feeling sick. Your letter

of amorous grief and the

ligature of dreams cannot be meant for me.

I’m cold. To love you through this torrent

of heavy rains is such a maddening

pain, it’s such a foul and nasty spring.

THIS MORNING AN OLD TREE FELL DOWN

This morning an old tree fell down

outside my window. I couldn’t help but notice.

And looking at its quivering leaves,

I remembered how the wind had once blown the hair about

on my late neighbor’s head, and I realized

that lifeless this tree had shaken its branches

through all these summer moons

and lifeless – through all these winter

suns.

* * *

* * *

I dreamt of the walls of cities, of the rolling

of seas, of mountains and pine trees and towers

in the sky, the unhurried whisper

of foreign graves and the unfearsome

vastness of foreign churches,

and I imagined voices in vain, and hair

flowed through my fingers, and behind my back

the days stole away – notorious thieves – and

dropped back around the corner to boast

of their cleverness. And then

I dreamt of

Mama. In the dawn light she draws near

to the shelf

and gazes into my paper

eyes,

and now she can scarcely believe

it’s me, as someone races up the stairs or

scuffles across the mat, as someone,

without knocking,

turns

the handle

of the door.

* * *

* * *

Rather than belch about our lairs

sipping rusty-tasting tea,

rather than cry or piss against the wind,

or carry our hide to the pawnbroker,

we’d best advertise at once:

«Seeking an old widow-woman

who speaks her native tongue and Russian

for crime and punishment.

Room and board. Everything included.

Apply early Monday morning.»

FOR STYOPA THE CAT

You’ve left, my whiskery-stripy

little beast, for that uttermost land –

farther than any America or France –

where I can no longer bring you tuna in the morning,

or change the water in your dish at night, or meet

your infinitely steady, ancient gaze,

like falling into a bottomless pit. But this

I know: in that distant vale

waits one to pour you nectar

and carry you off in beyond-the-looking-glass embraces

to their dense forests and meadows lush.

RALPH’S SONG

How fair this place, there’s no one here…[1] But

you, whose heaven I fashioned of the half-sighs

of Petropolis, whom/in whom I would not

believe, you send me as of old

our music at Easter, and now

too at Christmas.

American

who’s endured the fiction of assured

equalities, and with whose weakness

I patched and bridged the valley

of my failing émigré strength, you

return my music to me

across the years,

in this year of deaths/partings, from there

where – for the first time – you’re not alone. Alone.

Silent

Paris. Alien Christmas. Good-for-nothing

homeland – that too is gone

utterly. With the other. And the others. And you. And I? I but

listen as of old to Vivaldi, and now

too: Here are God

and I alone…

SAINT-BRIAC

In the dark house the shadows do their

circle dance, shadows looking out from cardboard

boxes and sitting sleepless over letters,

shadows abed all in a row, shadows

worshipping shadows and rustling

their skirts. Shadowlike I follow a shadow –

until a corner where the wind grows stronger,

where an evergreen weeps and a bird moans –

where the road of the Grand Duke comes to rest

upon a dream that’s been spent.

AT THE THEATRE

And holding onto a shadowy hand,

There above a rose-colored lake of smoke,

In mantles dusty with yearning,

We shall resolve to be silent

For the last opera of the world –

Belching a spoonful of codliver oil

And flaunting our purple loge.

* * *

* * *

For the experience of priceless oblivion

friends slip away into letters and into marriage,

into the bottle and the photoalbum gloss of progeny,

into despair and indifference, into sickness

and fortune, into the grave and into themselves –

out of mind and sight, far from our hails and drooping

shoulders.

Along roadways that have never

been dry, down the quicksilver rivers

of an unmoving twilight they pass away

into the winters… And from the hills of a bristled

park their crunching trail leads now

to a most crystalline bay

of prodigal souls.

* * *

* * *

Between the astral struggle of the winds

and the slippery chasms of a silent ocean,

beyond a distance swallowed up in a maw of distances

and overlaid with the sirens’ honeyed

cantilena, there swims in the light an isle

unknown, on whose sands is washed away “my very

own boy,” and after a faint period – “Mama.”

[1] The first and last lines are from a well-known romance by Rachmaninov.
