Updated Navy and Army List (1915)
Post date: Jan 24, 2014 5:40:32 PM
Extract from Parish Magazine of June 1915
WATERINGBURY PARISH NAVY AND ARMY LIST.
Being again absent from the parish for a short period, I have asked my colleague to revise and publish these lists in the Parish Magazine. It has cost him some trouble, owing to the difficulty of getting the information quite accurate. The names are those of parishioners, and sons or sons-in-law of parishioners. As to the order, the Navy list is put in alphabetical order; the Army list is arranged as it appears in Whitaker's Almanack, except that we have grouped Regular, Service and Territorial Battalions and Corps in that order.
We propose to send a copy, with one of last month's Magazine, to every man whose name appears therein. I shall be obliged if a note of any mistakes or omissions be sent to me as soon as possible. Next month I hope to give a supplementary list of recent recruits, and to print extracts from letters from the front.

The following extract, from a letter received by one of our parishioners and passed on to us, will be of interest: —" I often think of you, but you have been suddenly brought into my mind in a manner which may be considered quite out of the usual. My train is standing in one of the embarkation sheds of the Empress Dock, waiting for a Hospital Ship to come in. On the berth standing exactly opposite my private saloon is a nice St. John Ambulance Car waiting to take some of the wounded off the boat by road to local Hospitals or Netley6. On this car is written: 'Presented by Wateringbury, Kent'. I thought it might be of interest to some of your local people to know where and to what a useful purpose your gift has been put to."

Notes:
1. Thomas Richard Bowles died when his ship, then the battlecruiser HMS Lion was hit (14 times) at Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916. Of the complement of 1,092 men 99 were killed; the ship was repaired and eventually sold as scrap in 1922 , see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Lion_(1910)
2. Alfred Gunner was killed on 30th December 1915 when HMS Natal exploded in the Cromarty Forth.
3. Two of the five Waghorns listed are shown as having this number which cannot be correct.
4. See Shotter's letter of 14 November 1914 at Driver Shotter's letter from front .
5. H.M.S. Changuinola was an Armed Merchant Cruiser (AMC) of 6,000 tonnes capable of 15 knots with 6 x 6 inch guns and a complement of 217 men. It had been built in 1912 and hired by the government in November 1914 and was "commissioned" by Commander Brocklebank (from Wateringbury Place) on 24 December 1914. Although with guns it was not capable of facing an enemy warship as it was unamoured. It then spent most of the war (until December 1917) as part of the 10th cruiser squadron on the Northern Patrol enforcing the blockade of Germany. Because of the new dangers of mines and submarines this was a distant rather than a close blockade: a 200 mile gap between the Shetlands and Norway had to be covered and all ships stopped for inspection (by sending a boarding party) to see if they were carrying contraband cargo. Changuinola was one of 24 AMCs eventually undertaking this task. Brocklebank's dairies and letters from this time were published in 1974. It was a cold frequently boring task, requiring considerable diplomacy when vetting neutral, particularly American, shipping, but it was successful in cutting off Germany from her usual imports of food and raw materials causing the German people real hardship by January 1916. Brocklebank's dairies and letters from this time were published in 1974.
6. Netley: a large military hospital near Southampton expanded during WW1 to provide 2,500 beds.

8. William Charles Head killed at Battle of Loos in September 1915.
