The Lincolnshire Chronicle of Friday 27th September 1895 reported as follows:

A very destructive fire occurred on Tuesday at the Pelican Farm, Wateringbury, near Maidstone in the occupation of Messrs Leney, brewers. No less than six valuable ricks were destroyed. The efforts of the fire brigades to prevent a spread of the flames from one rick to another were futile. It is believed that the fire was caused by incendiaries.
