Extract from Maidstone Telegraph, 23rd May 1863

WATERINGBURY.—

On Saturday last, a man named George Hodge, about sixty years of age, of this place, was in the act of climbing on to a brewer's dray, in the outskirts of the town, for the purpose of riding home, when a heavy barrel fell from the top of the dray, and the iron-hooped edge coming on to his left hand three of his fingers were severely crushed. The sufferer was afterwards taken to the West Kent General Hospital, when it was found necessary to amputate two of them. We are pleased to add that the unfortunate man is progressing favourably.
