Extract from Northampton Mercury, 13th September 1845:

Mereworth, Nettlestead, Wateringbury, and Teston.—The northerly winds of the last week have greatly retarded the growth of the hops, and although there are many in number, they are very small in size. Time will prove whetherthey ultimately obtain their usual size and quality

Extract from West Kent Guardian, 2nd August 1845:

Wateringbury and Nettlestead. —The hops look exceedingly healthy, and grow rapidly, and are fast coming into burr. Some of the savans are ready to bet in favour of a duty of £200,000.
