Extract from Kentish Gazette of 27th October 1863:

Daniel Crawley, the elder, was charged with assaulting and wilfully obstructing Thos. Tumber, a constable, whilst in the execution of his duty, at Marden, on the 23rd of Sept. Mr. F. J. Smith was for the prosecution. A witness named Smith was examined, who proved that prisoner used a knife against the police-constable when interfered with him while fighting with man named Solloway, at the King's Head, Wateringbury. Mr. H. M. Gould, surgeon, was sent for, who found the wounds were serious, though not of such a nature as endanger life. —Prisoner was found "guilty", and sentenced to eighteen months' hard labour.

Although not mentioned the September date implies a hopping connection.
