Servant steals cheques from Jude (1879)

STEALING A POST LETTER AT WATERINGBURY.

Sarah Chapman, 15, servant, pleaded guilty to stealing post letter, containing therein cheques value £23 12s. 6d., the property of Wm. Jude and others, at Wateringbury. Mr. Denman prosecuted, and prisoner was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and five years in a reformatory. Sarah Maria Chapman, mother of the prisoner, was indicted for the same offence, but no evidence being offered against her she was discharged.
