Wateringbury Gas Company Limited (1928)

Gas was manufactured near Bow Road from the 19th century. The National Archives summarises the background to a collection of documents held in the Transco plc archives (ref: BG11/WAG) apparently covering the period 1928 -1948, which I have not investigated but which I am sure would be worthwhile for anyone with a bit of local knowledge:

The rights to supply gas in the parishes of Wateringbury and Nettlestead had been conferred on the Mid-Kent Gaslight & Coke Company by the Mid-Kent Gas Act 1899 but the company never exercised their rights. At some time prior to 1928 a private supplier, Frederick Leney & Sons, provided a supply. In 1928 the Wateringbury Gas Company Ltd was formed and purchased the gas manufacture and supply business. The Wateringbury Gas Order 1929 conferred Statutory Powers on the undertaking for the supply of gas in parts of the parishes of Wateringbury and Nettlesford and rescinded the powers over these areas previously granted to Mid-Kent GLCC. A controlling interest in the company was obtained by the South Eastern Gas Corporation in 1935. On nationalisation in 1949 the undertaking became part of the Maidstone Group of the Kent County Division of SEGB.
