Extract from Parish magazine of May 1890:

The Rev. E.M. Stickings having held services on Friday evenings during Advent and Lent , at the Duke's Head Room, kindly organised a Tea and Entertainment for those who had attended these services and others in that part of the parish. About one hundred adults and a few children (who had formed a voluntary choir) sat down to an excellent Tea, which was followed by a capital Entertainment of Songs, Recitations etc. The provisions for the tea were provided by the kindness of several ladies and gentlemen in the parish, and the guests were waited on by Mrs. and the Misses Reeves, Miss Goodwin (Rose Cottage), the Misses Bourchier, A. Goodwin, Login, and Mrs Martin. In the course of the evening the room was visited by the Vicar (who gave a short address after tea), Mrs Scheidner, Miss Paterson, Miss Phillips, Mr. H. Russell, Mr. W. Dray, etc. Hearty expressions of thanks were given to Mr. Stickings, and to the several ladies and gentlemen who attended to the comfort of the guests or took part in the Entertainment. Above 90 persons attended the Service in the Duke's Head Room on Good Friday afternoon.
