Extract from Parish magazine of October 1891:

The Hop-picking Season this year has been attended with several sad events.    A child was run over and killed at Mereworth, a poor woman named Mary Cooper died very suddenly in her hut, another fell  off her bin and  died immediately, and  several minor accidents have happened. Mr Leach (for the 32nd year running), has been employed as Missionary,  assisted by Mr.  Simpson, who has been working amongst the pickers at the Canon Court and Hermitage grounds.    Mr. Colby, jun.,has given several  Magic Lantern Exhibitions, which have been greatly appreciated.    The attendances in the Tent at Canon Court have been very satisfactory, and the Children's Sunday School has been most successful.
