Extract from Hampshire Advertiser, 19 August 1885:

A Whirlwind.— A whirlwind has passed over the little village of Nettlestead, in Kent . Passing through a field of oats, it carried several sheaves along in its course, and it is stated that it deposited one at the top of a large oak tree. Several oilcloths which were used to cover a stack of hay, were lifted from their position and carried across the river, while in crossing the stream the whirlwind caused a small waterspout. A barn close by also suffered by having its thatched roof partly carried away. It is reported that several of these phenomena have recently occurred in the parishes of Wateringbury and East Farleigh in the same neighbourhood, but on a much smaller scale.
