Shorthorn sale (1888)

Extract from Manchester courier of 11th July 1888:

There was a notable shorthorn sale at Wateringbury in Kent last week, the stock being the property of Messrs. A. and E. Leney. Several Duchesses, Oxford heifers and Waterloo's were disposed of, 13 cows and heifers averaging £72 11s. Duchess of Hindlip IV., and Duchess of Orpines were purchased by Mr. W. M'Culloch, the former for 185 guineas and the latter for 260 guineas.

The sale had been advertised as follows in the Whitstable Times of 30th June 1888 :

WATERINGBURY, KENT. Important Sale of first class Shorthorns.

MR. JOHN THORNTON will Sell by Auction, on Thursday next, July 5 (one o'clock), at Orpines, close to Wateringbury Station, S.E.R., and four miles from Maidstone, order of Augustus Leney. Esq., not having been cleared, the very choice herd of SHORTHORNS, comprising some of the very finest specimens of the Duchess, Oxford, Waterloo, Wild Eyes, Surmise, and Knightley tribes. The cows and heifers are mostly in calf to Duke Belvedere, a Thorndale Rose bull, who is included in the sale, as well as several other first class young red Bates bulls fit for service or exportation.

HADLOW PLACE, KENT. MR. JOHN THORNTON will Sell Auction, on Thursday next, July 5, at Orpines, Wateringbury Station S.E.R., immediately after the sale of the Wateringbury herd, Mr. Edward Leney's entire herd, bred at Hadlow Place since 1871, in consequence of the farm being given up. It comprises about 50 head, of the Foggathorpe, Acomb, Waterloo, Sweetheart, Gazelle and other good tribes. Prince of Waterloo 50,255 now service and for sale.
