In Kent Archives (reference P/385/19/1) described as the sale of the ' workhouse' but possibly meaning 'poorhouses' is a copy of an order dated 18th July 1836 from the Poor Law Commissioners of England and Wales addressed to the Guardians of the Poor of the Parish of Wateringbury, Malling Union. The order cites an Act of the 4/5th year of the reign of King William IV entitled 'An Act for the amendment and better administration of the laws relating to the Poor in England and Wales', and an Act of 5/6th year of reign of King William IV entitled 'An Act to facilitate the conveyance of Workhouses and Other Property of Parishes and of Incorporations or Unions of Parishes in England and Wales'. The order is to sell within 30 days "Eight cottage dwellings and about two acres of land partly planted with fruit built on the waste of the manor of Wateringbury about 50 years ago, which manor now belongs to Mr. Alderman Lucas." The monies arising are to be paid to the Treasurer of Malling Union.

Also under the same reference is an Appropriation Order dated 28th October 1836 from the Poor Law Commissioners to the Guardians of the Poor of Malling Union refering to the previous order. Whereas the premises had been sold for £295-19s.-9d (after expenses), £227-10s. of this sum was to be applied "in defraying the proportion of the parish of Wateringbury of the expense of erecting a Workhouse for the said Union."
