The Late Mr. Amos Baker

(Wateringbury).

Another much respected inhabitant and tradesman of Wateringbury passed away on September 24th, when Mr. Amos Baker died at the age of 64 from heart failure, resulting from an internal complaint for which he had undergone an operation about two months previously. Mr. Baker had lived in Wateringbury for 30 years, during which time he had made many friends in the neighbourhood, and had always been ready to take his share of public work. Amongst other offices which he held were those of Parish Councillor and Chairman of Burial Board, Secretary to the Cricket Club, Manager and Correspondent of the Schools, Sidesman at the Parish Church, Treasurer of the War Savings Association, one of the Auditors of the Working Men’s Insti­tute and W.M. of the Equitable Friendly Society.

The funeral took place on Saturday September 28th, the service at the Parish Church being taken by the Vicar Canon G. M. Livett, assisted by the Rev. F. M. Richards. The ser­vice in the church was choral; the hymns being “Peace Perfect Peace” and “Now the Labourer’s, task is o’er." The special Psalm was the 90th and funeral music by Tallis was played on the organ by Mr. Edgar A. Smith. The interment took place in Wateringbury Cemetery.

The deceased leaves a widow and two sons. One of these, Victor Edward, is serving in the Army in Mesopotamia. The other, with his wife and the widow, was amongst the family mourners, who also included the brother of deceased, Mr. B. W. Baker, Mr. W. Collins, Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Collins, Mrs. Hitchcock and Miss B. A. Green. There were likewise present the employees. Bro. Kember(Equitable Society, Tunbridge Wells), Mr. E. Taylor, Mr. J. G. Epps. Mr. H. Green (Messrs. Leney and Sons), Mr. Chas.King (Messrs. Jude, Hanbury and Co.), Mr. W. H. Hubble, Mr. R.French (churchwarden). Mr. H. French. Mr. and Miss Lambert. Miss Goodwin, Mrs. Long­ley, Mr. Wm. Sharpe, etc.
