Will of Brihtric and Aelfswith (c. 964-994)

Post date: Sep 05, 2012 10:42:34 AM

This undated will, believed to be from between 964 and 994, is the earliest known written reference to Wateringbury. A joint will of a man, Brihtic, and his wife, Aelfswith, was not unusual in the Anglo-Saxon period. It is likely that they lived in Meopham and had several estates in Kent : Wateringbury was granted to their kinsman Wulsie.

Photos of the will, which is part of a collection of documents connected with Rochester Cathedral known as the Textus Roffensis, and further discussion of the background can be found in the society's publication, A History of Wateringbury to 1086.
