Extract from Parish magazine of October 1888:

HOP-PICKING

We fear that the present season must be counted amongst the unfavourable ones for growers and pickers generally in our parish. The weather, however, has been most favourable , which has been some compensation to the pickers at least. The number of immigrant pickers has been much below the average, which has considerably conduced to the quiet of the village. Messrs. Leach and Churchman have been acting as Missioners, and Mr. Colby has kindly given several exhibitions of his magic lantern at Mr. Fremlin's farms. All the Missioners employed in the neighbourhood were kindly entertained at Yalding Vicarage by Mr. and Mrs. Lamplugh on the afternoon of Saturday , September 22nd.
