ASH'S EAST KENT BREWERY PURCHASED BY MESSRS. JUDE, HANBURY AND CO., OF WATERINGBURY

Ash's East Kent Brewery has this week been taken over by its new owners, Messrs. Jude, Hanbury and Co.. Wateringbury. By the purchase of the Dane John brewery at Canterbury, which was established as long ago as 1785, Messrs. Jude, and Co. will own close on 200 licensed houses in various parts Kent and in East Susses. Most of the ninety houses owned the old firm of Ash's are in East Kent, while those belonging to Messrs. Jude, and Co. are in Mid-Kent and East Sussex. Besides the brewery at Canterbury, Messrs. Ash's owned stores and depots at Sandwich and Dover and Messrs. Jude Hanbury have their present brewery in Wateringbury and stores at Tunbridge Wells and Chatham. All these properties have been taken over by the Wateringbury firm.

It is the intention of the new owners to spend a very considerable amount of money in thoroughly doing their newly acquired properties in East Kent and in making them more convenient in every way, but while doing this they are determined to retain the character of the old houses, which will be in keeping with the architecture of the cities and towns which they are situate. The policy of the new firm will be to make their houses the best Kent.

The name of Jude, Hanbury and Co. is so well known that the coming of this firm to Canterbury and into East Kent will be welcomed by all who are anxious for the prosperity of this part the county. It has been rumoured that the Dane John brewery at Canterbury might be closed in the near future, but we understand that the new owners are considering the advisability of doing all their brewing at Canterbury and of closing their Wateringbury brewery. If this suggestion is adopted it will mean much to Canterbury because under these circumstances the old Dane John brewery will be enlarged and brought right up date and much more Labour will lie employed than is the case at present.
