Matthias Lucas and Vintners' Company

Two publications of the Vintners' Company record Matthias Lucas' association with the Vintners' Company, one of the twelve great livery companies of the city of London: The Vintners Company by Thomas Milbourne (1888) and The Vintners' Company Ancient Plate etc (1910) .

Matthias Prime Lucas was admitted to the Freedom of the Vintners' Company on 4th February 1784 and became master in 1817 and again in 1838; a portatrait of him is preserved in the Court Room of the Company. His arms were Ermine, a fesse engrailed azure between six annulets gules. These arms were engrossed on the plate presented by him to the Vintners' Company in 1827 with the addition of this crest- on a coronet a dragon's head azure, gorged with a collar charged with three annulets or; and were registered to him in the College of Arms in 1832.

The second publication lists two items he presented to the Vintners' :

No 15 Two-handled cup and cover Period George IV. Weight 152 oz. 12 dwt. Date mark 1814 . This cup and cover once belonged to H.R.H. the Duke of York , whose arms are on the vessel. It was purchased by Alderman Lucas and afterwards presented by him to the Company.

No 16 Silver-gilt Rosewater dish 22 1/2 " in diameter. The centre boss is much raised, and the whole is enriched with repousse work. Inscribed "Presented to the Worshipful Company of Vintners by Alderman Lucas, the Father of the Company 15th February 1844."
