Sir George Stewart Symes (1882-1962)

George was born in Wateringbury on 29th July 1882 to Lt. Col. William Alexander Symes and his wife, Emily Catherine. He was baptised in St. John the Baptist Church on 10th september 1882 by Rev. Spencer Phillips. It is believed the family lived near Upper Mill but they appear on no censuses.

George followed his father into the army and then went on to have a distinguished career in colonial administration as Governor of Palestine, north district (1920-25) , Chief Secretary to Government of Palestine (1925-28), Resident at Aden (1928-31), Governor of Tanganyika (1931-34) and Governor General of Sudan (1934-40).

He died in Folkestone in 1962.
