Extract from Maidstone Telegraph Saturday 20th July 1861:

Regatta.—A number of young men in Maidstone" have recently established a "Star Rowing Club," whose smart "turn out" may have been observed skimming along the Medway during the summer evenings. Other clubs have also been started in emulation, and a scheme is now on foot to get up a regatta. Subscriptions are being collected by the members of the "Star Club" to offer as prizes, and no doubt the proposal will meet with encouraging support from the friends of this agreeable out-door recreation.
