Extract from Kentish Gazette - Tuesday 11 September 1787

Most of the farmers in the neighbourhood this town, have finished their harvest and they all agree that their crops were never more plentiful, nor housed in higher perfection.

The hop picking is already begun in the East part of this country, which in general turns out but very indifferent, except a few grounds about Robertsbridge, which are much better than the plantations in general; they are very good in some parts Kent, particularly Maidstone, Barming, Teston, East and West Farley, Wateringbury, Nettlested and Peckham, where they are gathering from twelve to fifteen hundred of an acre, which must prove very advantageous to the planters in that neighbourhood, as it is supposed their best hops will fetch from ten to twelve pounds per hundred.
