Extract from The Freeman's Journal, Australia, 27 December 1917

The Franciscan Fathers still carry on their work amongst the hop-pickers in Kent. Although, owing to Government orders, the acreage under hops has been much reduced this year, nevertheless many thousands of immigrants, mostly from the East End of London, found their way into the hop gardens. Catholic mission centres were this year established at East Farleigh, Wateringbury, East Peckham, Paddock Wood, Hunton, Benover, Marden, and Staplehurst. The Sunday Masses - were generally well attended!.
