Assault (1916)

Extract from Kent Messenger of 7th October 1916

BAD FEELING AT WATERINGBURY.

Robert Spain was summoned for assaulting Mary Hughes, at Wateringbury, on September 11th.

The case for complainant, who was corroborated by her husband and daughter was

that the defendant, who lived close to her,rushed into her house, hit her in the breast

and knocked over the table on which was lighted lamp.

In the witness box defendant said he called to ask Mrs. Hughes why she had been saying

things to the landlord about his wife. She abused him, called him a liar and pushed

him in the chest. He thereupon pushed her “ in return,” and she fell against the table.

Mrs. Spain confirmed her husband’s account of the affair, and the Magistrates

dismissed the case.
