Ted Bates in an article in "More About Wateringbury" (2008) notes (page 67) that Matthias Lucas whilst living at Dacre House, Lee, Kent in 1814 was one of 40 local people who signed a petition to require France to abolish the slave trade as part of the then proposed peace treaty. The petition is held in LocalHistory and Archives Centre, Lewisham and can be seen online at  http://lewisham-heritage.wikidot.com/lee-petition.  There is also the signature of Charles Lucas on the petition, believed to be his son who predecessed him. Wider background can also be obtained from this link.
