Extract from Edward Greensted's 1781 'History and anecdotes of the Parish of Wateringbury':

''The water of this parish is sweet, and wholesome, the air healthy as is shown by the age of the inhabitants, there being now in the parish living at this time nine of the inhabitants whose ages together amount to more than 738 years. Here are several springs of sweet water ...which break out of the ground particularly one which springeth up by the highway side from under Sir Thomas Style's garden wall much noted for the for the clearness and sweetness of its waters in which the present Countess of Westmoreland took so great delight that when she resided at Mereworth she sent daily for it for her own necessary uses. ''

The complete History is now available as a Word file at Edward Greensted's History and anecdotes.
