Extract, reporting on the quarterly meeting of Kent Education Committee, from Kent & Sussex Courier 03 May 1918:

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

The Elementary Education Sub-Committee reported that the committee had associated itself with, amongst others, the Wateringbury Local School Canteen Committee and had appointed upon it as its representative Mrs E. Smith. Similar action was being taken with regard to Borough Green.

A new scale of salaries for elementary school teachers was submitted. The scale provides that certificated men teachers commence at 100 pounds per year and rise by automatic increments to a maximum of 240 pounds in 20 years; certificated women teachers start at 90 pounds and rise to 190 pounds after 18 years' service; uncertificated men teachers start at 75 pounds and rise to a maximum of 100 pounds in 8 years; and uncerticated women teachers start at 70 pounds and rise to 90 pounds in seven years.

There were 209 teachers absent on war service.
