Herbert Leney (1850-1915)

Herbert Leney b Wateringbury 1850 d Smith's Hall, West Farleigh. Kent- 1873-1877. 4 matches. RH bat. Fast RH Round-arm bowler. 58 Runs. HS 33 Av 11.60. He was the Uncle of F. B. Leney. Not in the XI whilst at Oxford University. His first match was against W.G.Grace's XI and in the Kent side was Lord Harris. His highest score was against Hampshire when he bowled with an analysis of 0-7.

TAB note: Herbert was one of four siblings born to Frederick Leney whose name is on the Wateringbury brewing company Frederick Leney and Sons. He is the younger brother of Augustus Leney who substantially expanded the business. Herbert was baptised on 13th December 1850 in Wateringbury Church. In the 1881 census he is a substantial farmer (285 Acres Employing 30 Men 20 Women & 12 Boys) living in South Street, Barming. By the 1901 census he has moved to Court Lodge, West Farleigh by which time he has married but is still described as a hop and fruit grower. He died in 18th November 1915 two weeks after his brother Augustus. Herbert's probate shows £2,420 effects (cf. Augustus' ££96,714) and that he was living at Smith's Hall in West Farleigh.
