Westburies Manor Court (1601)

This was translated from the Latin by Elizabeth Finn of Kent Archives. Although recorded in Latin the actual proceedings would have been in English. It is held at Kent Archives as U71/36.

Notes:

1. Steward (senecallus in Latin): in a small manor the lord of manor would preside in person, but Roger Twysden owned many manors so his steward presided. In 1591 it was Thomas Tuttesham. In 1594, and 1614 the name of the steward is not recorded but in 1601 the steward is Francis Raworth. In 1602 the bailiff is Thomas Crowhurst.

2. Assessors: the amount of any fine was left to the decision of the assessors at the end of the proceedings. The amount of fines were often written above the names of those fined as in this case. Possibly the main part of the record had been written beforehand leaving the amount of fine to be written above the name as in this case.

3. Court baron is the regular manor court often held every 3 weeks.
