THE TONBRIDGE REGATTA. This pleasant event, which is carried on annually under the auspices of the Tonbridge Boating Club, took place on Saturday last, when the rowing was of a most interesting description. This year the Maidstone Alliance Club were the only visitors who put in an appearance; the Wateringbury crew, who last year achieved great honours here, being conspicuous by their absence. Mr J. W. Thorpe, of the Parade Tunbridge Wells, supplied refreshments, and the Tunbridge Wells Parade Band gave great satisfaction by its excellent playing. The following were the officers:—Stewards: Messrs. H. Bartram, Dallas Beeching, T. Clarkson, A. A. Conroy, J. G. Crease, J. Le Fleming, W. Flood, E. T. Foakes, E. J. Gorham, J. Jephson, R. Owen, J. Payne, C. R. Peake, W. Gordon Rich, H. Stow, J. M. Streeten, T. Twinch, and L. Wadmore. Starters: Mr James M. Streeten and Mr W. Flood. Judges: Mr J. Le Fleming and Mr Bartram. Referee: Mr W. Gordon Rich. Mr J. Le Fleming, the captain, rendered most valuable assistance, as did also Mr T. Foakes, the hon. sec. Subjoined is a list of the racing:— Town Challenge Cup (open to Clubs on the Medway).—lst, Tonbridge Club: E. T. Foakes, T. Clarkson, J. Jepheon, W. Flood (stroke), W. J. Cousins (cox.); 2nd, Maidstone Alliance Club S. Price, Hearnden, W. A. Carpenter, Rogers (stroke), Wells (cox.) Tonbridge won by two lengths. Canoe Race. —First heat: Ist H. Bartram, 2nd C. Furber, 3rd L. Wadmore. Second heat: Ist J. M. Streeten, 2nd A. J. Conroy, 3rd E. J. Stidolph. Sculling Race (for a Challenge Cup presented by J. Le Fleming, Esq.)—lst W. Flood, 2nd L. Wadmore. Wadmore, running into the bank on entering the straight, extinguished his chance. Pair-oared Dingey Race, Ist heat (Open to non-members of the Club resident in Tonbridge).—lst Ellen (scarlet), H. C. Morland, J. E. G. Templer, Johnstone (cox) ; 2nd Ada (white), S. Norton, T. Norton, A. Norton (cox). Won by a length. Ladies' Challenge Cup (open to Clubs on the Medway).—lst, Tunbridge Club: E. T. Foakes, T. Clarkson, J. Jephson, W. Flood (stroke), W. J. Cousins (cox). 2nd, Maidstone Alliance Club: S. Price, Hearnden, W. A. Carpenter, Rogers (stroke), Wells (cox). The Maidstone crew appeared to be in the best form at starting, but the Tonbridge crew won easily by two lengths. Pair-oared Dingey Race, Second Heat(open to non-members of the Club resident in Tonbridge).—lst, Ellen (scarlet), G. Gabriel, F. Collins, T. Cheal (cox.); 2nd, Ada (white), H. Cheal, F. Bennett, H. Sales (cox.) The Ellen won easily by several lengths. Members' Four-oared Race, final heat.— Ist, Rose (yellow), C. Furber, J. Jephson, H- Bartram, T. Clarkson (stroke), B. Wadmore (cox.); 2nd, Shamrock (blue), F. Hore, L. Wadmore, E. T. Foakes, W. Flood (stroke), A. F. Cousins (cox.) The Rose won by about a length and a half. Four Oared Race (open to non-members of the club resident in Tunbridge).—lst, Bee (green): H. E. Loxley, Fraser, J. G. E. Templer, H. C. Morland (stroke), Johnstone (cox); 2nd, Wasp (yellow): H. Cheal, G. Gabriel, F. Collins, F. Bennett (stroke), T. Cheal (cox). This race, which was well rowed, was won by the Bee by about a length. Coxswains' Four-Oared Race.—lst, Rose (yellow): W. J. Cousins, G. Beaumont, G. Burton, R. Bartram (stroke), H. Bartram (cox); 2nd, Shamrock (blue): A. F. Cousins, W. Beaumont, B. Wadmore, H. Foster (stroke), J. M. Streeten (cox). This was a very hollow affair, the Rose winning with great ease. Challenge Pair Oared Race (final heat). Ist, Buz (scarlet): J. M. Streeten, H. Bartram, A. F. Cousins (cox); 2nd, Huz (white): E. T. Foakes, W. Foord, W. J. Cousins (cox). Coxswains' Canoe Race (first heat). —Ist W. Beaumont, 2nd R. Bartram, 3rd G. Beaumont, 4th G. Burton. Canoe Race (final heat—first and second of trial heats). —Bartram, Conroy, and Furber started. Conroy fouled Bartram's canoe at the start, and Furber took the lead, but failing to go round the post, or change his seat, he was disqualified, although coming in first, and Bartram won. Coxswains' Canoe Race (second heat). Ist B. Wadmore, 2nd H. Foster, 3rd W. J. Cousins, 4th A. F. Cousins. This was a very good race throughout, and the youngsters promise well for the future. Pair Oared Dingy Race, Final Heat. (Open to non-members of the club resident in Tunbridge).— Winners of previous heats. Morland, Templer, and Johnstone (cox.), beat Gabriel, Collins, and Cheale (cox.), after a well contested race. Sculling Dingy Race, Final Heat.—lst, Ada (White), H. Bartram. 2nd, Ellen (scarlet), A. A. Conroy. This was a closely contested race, and was won by Bartram, who spurted gamely at the finish. Coxswains' Canoe Race, Final Heat. First and second of previous heats. —Foster, Beaumont, Wadmore, and Bartram started and got off well together: Foster won by by about half a length. Scratch Four Oared Race, Final Heat.— Ist, Rose (Yellow). F. Hore, L. Wadmore, J. Jephson, A. A. Conroy (stroke), W. J. Cousins (cox). 2nd, Shamrock (Blue), V. Conroy, T. Clarkson, E. T. Foakes, H. Bartram (stroke), F. Bartram (cox). The Rose, who pulled well together, won by three quarters of a length. At 5.25 Mr Ward, the celebrated diver, and swimming master of Tunbridge School, performed some of his wonderful feats, and was loudly cheered. Canoe Chase, —Ist. Hudson: 2nd. C. Furber. This amusing race was divided into heats, and was cleverly won by Hudson, a Maidstone man. The prizes at the conclusion of the races, were distributed by Mrs Gordon Rich.
