Extract from Kentish Gazette, 5th June 1860:

WATERINGBURY. Early on Wednesday morning last our village was aroused the ringing of a merry peal upon our new bells, announcing the 50th anniversary of the Amicable Benefit Society, which was held at the Duke's Head lnn. After the usual business had been transacted, they marched in procession, headed by the Maidstone Cavalry Depot Band, to Church, where the Rev. H. Stevens, vicar preached an excellent sermon, which was listened to with the most reverent attention. At the conclusion of the service the members reformed the procession to the Duke's Head Inn, and there sat down to an excellent dinner, provided by Mr. and Mrs. Boorman. The chair was taken Thomas White, Esq., who ably presided during the afternoon, and gave the members of the club some good advice, which was attentively received. The chairman was supported by Edwd. Goodwin, Esq., and W. Norton, Esq., surgeon. The afternoon was spent manner which reflected much credit upon the members.

For explanation of this society see Wateringbury has 'prettiest maidens Kent can boast of' (1836).
