Extract from Kent Messenger of 7th November 1914 reporting on Malling Rural Council's meeting.

CANNON LANE, WATERINGBURY.

Mr. J. Harris wrote asking the Council to hasten on the proposed improvement at Cannon Lane, Wateringbury. The Clerk said the resolution passed by the Council was as follows:“That the County

Council be requested to do the work, with such assistance as can be obtained from the Road Board.”

Mr. White moved that the Clerk ask the County Council what they proposed to do. It was explained that the proposal was to remove several trees at the corner, and round off the road.

Mr. Champion was strongly against this so-called improvement, because the result would be to make a slow corner into a fast one, so far as passing vehicles, etc., were concerned. If such obstacles as existed at this corner had also existed at the bottom of Town Hill, Malling, the Council would not now be regretting the death of Mr. Beadle.

Mr. White: That is quite a different thing.

Mr. Champion: I don’t agree with you. He suggested that when the trees wereremoved a fence should be erected to enable drivers to see through it. If, on the other hand, the additional space were thrown into the roadway, it would make it a fast corner and a dangerous corner.

Mr. Blest said there were persons at Wateringbury who proposed to put up a water trough for cattle at this spot, but they could not do so if the fence were erected, as suggested by Mr. Champion.

The Chairman: You would not take the trees down and have the trough at the corner?

Mr. Blest: That was the proposal.

Mr. White’s resolution was eventually adopted.
