Extract from Parish magazine of August 1884:

FLOWER SHOW.

The Wateringburv Gardeners', Amateurs', and Cottagers' Mutual Improvement Society held their Summer Show on Wednesday, July 23rd. Considering the dryness of the season, the show of Flowers and Fruit reflects great credit on the members. The gardeners of Messrs W. W. Blest, H. White, and R. H. Fremlin carried off most of the prizes in their class; whilst amongst the Wateringbury Amateurs and Cottagers, Messrs. Eagleton and Waterman in the former, and Messrs. Reader, R. Heath, Mann, Stone, and Weller in the latter division, appeared most successful. Mrs. Hook gained 1st prize for Home-made Bread, and Mrs Vennell for Cooked Potatoes.

For Penmanship, open to Boys under 14, George Hearsfield, Edward Atkins, Harold Heath, George Shepherd, and Frederick Knell were the prize takers, and Ernest Anderson was awarded an extra prize for a work of art in the form of a nicely executed illuminated scroll.

Prizes [were] offered for Needlework for Girls in the National School, but as no notice was given to the Mistress or Managers, no specimens were prepared for exhibition. This is to be regretted as the excellent Needlework sent out from our Schools has always attracted considerable attention at these Shows.
