Extract from Surrey Mirror, 5th September 1899:

Death of Mr. Herbert Russell.—We regret to record the death, which took place at Woodhill, Oswestry, last Wednesday, of Mr. Herbert Russell, of tbe Hermitage, Station road, Redhill. and 2, Paper Buildings Temple, E.C. The deceased gentleman, who was a barrister at law, went on a visit a fortnight ago to Oswestry, where he stayed with an old friend. Mr. Pollock, one of the sons of Baron Pollock, the well-known judge Mr. Russell took a chill last Sunday week, which was treated all too lightly, and he passed away quite unexpectedly at midnight the following Wednesday, when it was too late to summon his relations. Mr Russell was 46 years of age and was unmarried. He was the second son of the late Mr. Francis Russell of the Red House, Wateringbury. Although his business took him every day to London, he won for himself a wide circle of friends at Reigate and Redhill, by whom he will be much missed. He was a member of the local Philharmonic Society, and also of the Holmesdale Fine Arts Club, on behalf of which Society he exhibited many pictures. He has left behind him two brothers, the Rev. Francis Russell. Rector of Chingford, and Major Russell, of the Royal Engineers, at present stationed at Mauritius. The funeral takes place to-day (Tuesday) at Maidstone.

The 1881 census shows Herbert's parents living at The Red House with 4 servants. Herbert evidently followed in his father's career as a barrister.
