MARRIED V. SINGLE WATERINGBURY. This match was played on the old cricket ground, Wateringbury, there being 15 a-side. A large number of spectators were present, and much interest was taken in the game. The married party won the toss, and went to the wickets at two o'clock; but the bowling of T. Hodge was so fast that the first nine wickets fell in half-an-hour for 32 runs. However, with a well played 14 by Dann, they managed to put together a total of 67. The single team commenced well, Hook scoring 9, Billinghurst 16 and Bowles 22; but after Bowles the rest were soon disposed of, and the innings terminated for 66, being one less than their married opponents. The married then commenced their second innings, Bowles and Hodge bowling, the latter of whom was again very effective. C. Boorman scored 16, the rest of the wickets falling for singles for total of 42. The single party were now jubilant, and offered extravagant odds on themselves, but their wickets fell very fast, the only double figure (10) being made by T. Hodge. When the last pair were in an appeal was made to one of the umpires as to whether one them was out, and the umpire decided in the negative. The single team wanted two runs to win, and some dissatisfaction was caused by the decision of the umpire, as a majority of those present expressed their opinion that the party appealed against was out. The umpire's decision being final, play was resumed, and three more runs being added the bachelors won an exciting match by two runs. At the conclusion an adjournment was made to the King's Head, where excellent rump of beef was served up by the host, to which ample justice was done.
