Sale of Shorthorns (1874)

Extract from Royal Cornwall Gazette of 11 July 1874:

Important Sale of Shorthorns.— On Friday Mr Strafford sold at Wateringbury, near Maidstone, about 40 head of pure bred shorthorn cattle, comprising a choice selection of young stock from the beautiful herd of Messrs. Lever [sic ,but certainly Leney meant] and Sons, Orpines, Wateringbury. They had been bred from valuable animals of the Kirklevington, Fawsley, and other well-known herds, and such a collection of Charmer and Knightley blood allied with the unrivalled Duchess family was enough to cause consider- able interest in the sale. More than half the lots offered were by the American bulls Eighth Duke of Geneva and Sixth Duke of Oneida, and from celebrated Duchess cows, the sale including a splendid animal of this family, the Fourth Grand Duchess of Geneva, which was knocked down to Mr. J. Loder, of Northamptonshire, for 2,000 guineas. Lord Dunmore started the bidding at 1,000 guineas, and it then rose in six bids to 2,000 guineas : the next below being 1,700 guineas. The 28 heifers sold realised £8,001 or an average of £285 15s. Thirteen bulls were sold for at an average of £76 9s.4d, and the grand total amounted to £8,995 2s. Amongst those present at the sale were Lords Penrhyn, Dunmore, Chesham,Skelmersdale, and Bective. Duke of Manchester, Sir Curtis Lampson, Mr. Staveley Hill, &c.
