Kent Fines, 4-7 Edward III

95. At Westminster, St. Michael in one month AO 4--Betw. Ralph, son of Godefridus atte Melne, and Isabella his wife (by Henry Wikwane in place of said Isabella), plts., and Godefridus atte Melne, deft, of 1 mess1, 1 mill, and 48 acr. land with appurts2., in Woteryngeburi. Right of Godefridus, who, for the admission, grants (by the service of 12 quarters3 of wheat, 5 quarters of barley, and 10 quarters of oats, yearly during the life of Godfridus) to Ralph and Isabella, and to the heirs of the body of Ralph ; but if none, then after their deaths to remain to the right heirs of Ralph.

Endorsed:-“Richard, son of Nicholas atte Melle, asserts his claim.”

Notes:

1. Mess=messuage=dwelling house.

2. Appurts= appurtenances = what goes with the more significant item e.g the backyard going with a messuage or dwelling house.

3. Quarter=quarter of a hundredweight or 28 pounds.
