Post date: Mar 20, 2017 5:43:27 PM

A naval act of 1795 allowed petty officers, seamen, non-commissioned officers, and marines to remit part of their wages for the maintenance of their mothers, wives, or families. In order to achieve an allotment, the individual needed to complete an allotment declaration, and then their payments were entered into a register of allotments.

Joseph Homewood, an ordinary seaman on HMS Wellington, had married his wife, Mary in Wateringbury on 12 May 1849 and is shown in the allotment book in 1849 as allotting wages to her. He signs with a "X".

The National rchive reference is ADM 27/108.
