Westbury Manor Court (1715)

Held as reference U71 M37 in Kent Archives is a court roll for Westbury manor, dated 1715. It is in English and is reasonably readable. Until the Commonwealth most court rolls would have been in Latin (and many for a period of time after the 1660 Restoration.)

A rentall made and renewed at a court there holden the 17th day of October the second year of the reign of King George Anno Domine 1715

Fra. Twisden Steward

The tenants of the said Manor hold of the Lord by fealty suit of Court Rent Relief ?? on Heriot1 at the Death of any Tenant. And when there is no Heriot served then by the Custom of the said Manor there is due to the Lord the sum of 3s. 4d. for a Dead Heriot.

?? at the Court then & there holden it was proposed & desired by the Tenants & agreed to by Sir Wm Twisden Lord of the said Manor ???? that such tenants as pay any part of their rent in Hens, Cocks or Eggs shall & will for the future pay to the Lord in money viz for One Hen or Cock 9d.& at the rate of a groat2 for One Dozen of Eggs.

Notes:

1. Heriot was a due payable to the Manorial lord on the take up of a tenancy by the heir of a deceased tenant.

2. Groat was a coin worth 4d. (old pence). It was issued in England in 1561 and then not for another 100 years .
