The Select Committee of the House of Commons on Railways 1846 (as quoted in South Eastern Railway by Adrian Gray p. 284 ) gives statistics on SER's passenger traffic in 1845. There were 840,465 passengers of whom 41% were 1st class, 43% 2nd class and only 16% 3rd class.

The following shows numbers of passengers travelling to or from London from the Medway valley line stations:

Yalding 2,671

East Farleigh 2,136

Paddock Wood 8,749

Wateringbury 6,940

Maidstone 32,760

Note: in 1845 Maidstone's only connection to the rail network (and London) was on the Medway Valley Line.
