Rochester regatta (1872)

ROCHESTER REGATTA.

—The annual regatta of the Medway Rowing Club took place on Friday, and, aided by fine weather, the whole of the proceedings proved of a very attractive and enjoyable character. The ­attendance on the occasion was very large, a large gallery being erected on the Esplanade for the accommodation of visitors. During the interval between the races the band of the Royal Engineers, under the direction of their conductor, Herr Sawerthal, played an appro­priate selection of music.

The following were the races contested for :—

Doble’s Sailing Race, prizes presented by the members for the city—1, Florence, £2 10s.; 2, Clara, £1 5s.; 3, Albert, 15s.

Hufflers’ Sailing Race for prizes presented by the members for the city—1, George, £ 2 10s. ; 2, Gazelle, £1 5s.

Sculling Match for Ladies’ Challenge Cup—1, D. F. Tuffill.

Four-oared Race for Challenge Cup, between members of the Medway Club, the Wateringbury Club, and the Royal Engineers, and won by the Medway Club.

Pair-oared Race for a pair of silver challenge oars presented by Mr. W. Roberts—1, T. Crockford and C.P. Winterton.

Other minor events succeeded, followed by a Four-oared Race for cup presented by the officers of the Royal Engineers—1, Medway Club, beat­ing the Wateringbury, Gillingham, and Engineers’ Clubs.

The last race of the day was a Sculler’s Race for a cup given by the Mayor, which was won by Tuffill. The cups and prizes were presented to the successful competitors by the Mayor.
