The Great Failure of Hop Merchants.

ROBERT MENDHAM EVANS.

In the Court of Bankruptcy, on Thursday, before Mr. Registrar Pepys, examination sitting and application for order of discharge was held under the bankruptcy of Robert Mendham Evans, described as of Wateringbury, the County of Kent, and of No. 73, Warwick Square, Pimlico, and now of the Charing Cross Hotel, gentleman. Mr. Arnold Munns, Solicitor, 3, Old Jewry, appeared for the bankrupt, who with the greatest chivalry and blandness of manner seated himself in the reporter's box; and Mr. Robertson Griffiths represented the assignee, Mr. Michael Banes, accountant, BasinghallStreet. The bankrupt's son, John Carbery Evans, was present, and seemed to take filial interest in the proceedings, having only recently emerged out of the Court.

The "Statement of accounts" filed by the bankrupt was thus summed up, viz:— Dr.—To creditors unsecured, £22,918 2s. 3d.; liabilities on account of R. P. and J. C. Evans, £10,414 l5s. 3d. Total £33,332 17s. 6d. Cb. —By property given up to assignees, £11 12s. 9d.; by deficiency, £33,322 14s. 9d. Total, £33,332 17s. 6d. The bankrupt state that his expenditure had been £800 per annum.

The creditors are thus described:— Messrs. Evans and Co. (bankrupts), George Inn Yard, Borough, hop merchants, £22,893 13s. 3d.; March, 1865. The balance due for monies paid on liabilities contracted with respect to the transfer of my business to them after giving credit for the amount of the annuity due under deed dated 16th of March, 1865, and also for the balance of the said annuity. Liability on account R. P. Evans and J. C. Evans. The executors of Craster Humble, care of Hawkes, Willmott, and Co., High Street, Borough ; principal, £10,039 7s. 6d., interest, £375 8s. 6d., total £10,414 l5s. 3d. Amount due under deed or instrument dated 24th July, 1865, made by and between R. P. Evans and J. C. Evans of the first part, myself of the second part, and the executors of the said Craster Humble of the third part, being the amount of capital of the said Craster Humble in the business of R. P. and J. C. Evans. The " cash account" filed by the bankrupt, commencing 23rd of December,1869, shows —Total receipts, £1,029 18s. 11d., and total payments (less £11 12s. 9d at banker's), £1,029 18s. 11d.

Mr. Munns, for the assignee, offered no opposition, and Mr. Griffiths having addressed the Court in a fluent speech, attributing the bankruptcy to the failure of the bankrupt's sons Robert Percival and John Carbery Evans, the Court passed the bankrupt and granted his order of discharge, and the proceedings ended.
