AJ was born in Bow Road, technically in Nettlestead, but which he always described as Wateringbury. His father, Henry T. was a cooper so probably worked at one of the Wateringbury breweries. Henry's wife gave birth to 7 children of whom 6 were surviving at the time of the 1911 census when they were living in Chertsey, Surrey and by when AJ had followed in his father's steps becoming a cooper with the father now a publican.

When AJ entered the Royal Engineer's with the rank of sapper (service number 2206) we do not know, but he died at sea on 28th October 1915. Because of the brief nature of his association with Wateringbury he is not on the village or school memorial.
