Extract from South Eastern Gazette of 8th May 1917 reporting on Maidstone Rural Tribunal:

Bertram Leney, 28, married, general service, West Farleigh, managing director of Messrs. Leney and Co. brewers, etc., Wateringbury, told the Tribunal that it would be practically impossible to replace him. He had to manage a farm of 250 acres in addition to the brewery. The Chairman asked whether the bailiff could look after the farm, and Mr. Leney replied in the negative. The military appeal was, however, allowed.
