Wateringbury Parish Council Minutes 1894-1900

The following is a very abbreviated summary of the minutes of the Parish Council for the period above. Only items shown in quotation marks are direct transcriptions,

Parish Meeting was held at National Schools on 4th December 1894 to elect parish councillors. 17 valid nominations received. Election of 9 councillors proceeded by show of hands but John Taylor objected and demanded a poll, which took place on 17th December with following result:

Meeting of February 14, 1896

“The Clerk was requested to obtain the key of the Old Lock Up (The Cage) and if in use by any authority to make application for a payment of one shilling per year rent.”

Meeting of Nov 12, 1896

“After discussing the matter respecting Canon Heath it was proposed by Mr. Baker seconded by Mr. Pearson and carried nemcom that the clerk be instructed to write to the District Council informing them that apiece of Common or waste land known as Canon Heath in the Parish has been enclosed to the prejudice of the inhabitants and a right of way over the Heath thereby stopped or obstructed and requesting them to take such action as they deem necessary to cause such obstruction to be removed if unlawfully erected. “

Meeting of April 8, 1897

“A statement of accounts from the Rochester Bridge Estates was presented to the Council and after discussion Mr. Blest proposed the clerk write to enquire what and if any interest or liability the parish of Wateringbury has respecting these Estates.

Meeting of August 5 1897

“Mr. Whitmore proposed and Mr Shepherd seconded that the ‘lock up or cage’ be converted into a mortuary for the parish. Carried nem con.

Meeting of April 19 1900

“Mr. Baker proposed and Mr. Tapply seconded that the manager of S.E. Railway be written to complaining of the great inconvenience to the Parish through the insufficient goods accommodation and asking if anything is likely to be done in the immediate future to remedy this serious state of things. Carried nem con. The Clerk is requested to send copies of the above resolution to the Parishes of Teston, Mereworth and Nettlestead requesting then to pass similar resolutions.”
