WATERINGBURY

BOATING CLUB.-Many persons in the district have recollections of the annual regattas held by members of the old Boating Club, and it was thought by many in the neighbourhood that it was a pity the old state of affairs was allowed to drop through, and determined to see if they could not be revived. A circular was issued calling a preliminary meeting at the King's Head Hotel on Wednesday evening. A great number of friends answered the call , among them being Messrs A. Leney, R. Tapply, P.H. Copley, H. Harris, A. Baker, T. Hutson, C. Walloud, A. Andrews, R.Fry, H. Clementson, Clementson, jun., P. Groom, G. Hope, T. Brown, E. Smith, F.Harris, J. Taylor, B. Luck, T. Hutson jun., W. Barham, and G. Rose. Mr. A. Leney was asked to preside. It was unanimously agreed that a boating club be formed , and that Lieut.-Col. Davis be the president of the same with Mr. A. Leney for vice-president. Mr. J. Fry consented to be treasurer of the new club, he having been secretary of the old one. It was also agreed to ask Mr W. Jude to act as secretary , Mr. H. White having promised to help in the same. The meeting asked Mr. J. Taylor , who was acting secretary pro tem., to see Messrs. J.W.Fry and H.White on the matter of obtaining patron and patronesses to the club. During the evening Mr T. Hutson had on view some dozen of cups, pieces of plate , medals and other trophies won by his family in previous Wateringbury regattas, some of the cups dating back to 1867. Mr. Leney , in closing the meeting stated that the new Boating Club started with every sign of success , and that he hoped future regattas would be as successful as past ones when the banks of the river for the whole course was thronged with people. He gave notice that the next meeting would be on Wednesday June 25th at the same place at 8 p.m. The usual vote of thanks was accorded the chairman.
