The following advert is taken from the Sussex advertiser of 20 May 1856:

Purple Top Swedish Turnip Seed.

W. H. MARSHALL begs to offer his agricultural friends his selected and transplated (14 years in succession) PURPLE TOP SWEDISH TURNIP SEED. This stock is well known by having taken the First Prize, 11 years out of 14, at the Kent and Maidstone Cattle Show. The highest recommendation can be given by several of the first agriculturists in the county.

W. H. M. trusts that he shall meet with the encouragement which his care in selecting this superior stock deserves.

Any quantity may be sent by application (by letter) to W. H. Marshall, Wateringbury.

Also GREEN GLOBE, GREEN TOP SCOTCH and SMART'S WHITE GLOBE.

The next year the following extract was in the Kentish Gazette of 15th December 1857 in a report on the Kent Cattle Show:

Roots.—The show of roots was superb; never were there larger wurtzel, better-shaped turnips, more astonishing carrots. The very worst that were exhibited were worthy of a prize, and some really ought to have had two. We were glad for the honour of Kent to see that seed of Mr. Marshall was successful —particularly just now, as we hear that he received commands of his Royal Highness to supply the model farm at Windsor, and that the royal turnips are from seed raised at Wateringbury.
