Mereworth, Wateringbury, and East Peckham. — The hops in these parishes are looking remarkably well. There is no flea at present. The bine in most grounds appears strong and kindly. If the weather proves favourable there is every prospect of a good crop.

Extract from West Kent Guardian 22nd August 1844:

At the usual hop dinner at the King's Head Inn, the betting for the sweepstakes averaged about £130,000. There were thirty-five gentlemen present, consisting of farmers, hop-factors, and persons connected with the culture or sale of hops. The dinner was given in Mr. Freeman's best style; and the whole passed off with the greatest hilarity.
