Extract from Maidstone Telegraph 25th June 1870. The Judes are believed to have owned Broomscroft in Canon Lane (normal spelling rather than as in text below) as their family home from about 1870, but the reference below to "my brewery at Bromscroft" is strange.

MALLING HIGHWAY BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held at the Swan Hotel, on Monday last, when the following were present, Mr Henry Peppercorn (chairman). Messrs T. Sharman, J. Cole, J. Usher, Wilson, Wells, Woollett, Southon, Wheeler, Holding, Foreman, W. A. Fremlin, and W. S. Norton (clerk to the Board). The minute of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the Finance Committee reported that the Surveyor had in hand £123 2s. 7d.; the Treasurer, £467 3s. 2d ; and in the Bank,£291 15s 3d.

The Chairman then opened the proceedings reading the following application from Mr Jude, brewer, of Wateringbury.

June 18th, 1870.

Sir, I have for about the 14 years last past, by the permission of the Trustees of the Tunbridge and Maidstone turnpike roads, used a portion of the road for about 500 yards, from Mr Henry White's house to my brewery, for the conveying of water under ground in iron pipes. I am desirous now, as the present pipes from my brewery at Bromscroft through Mr Lucas's land are too near the surface, to to lay down new three-inch iron pipes from my property at Bromscroft along the highway underground. It will be an accommodation to me if I am allowed to lay down the new pipes underneath the highway from my property to Bromscroft to join my present pipes near Mr H. White's house. I have accordingly to ask that you will lay before the Highway Board , a request for their permission to do so. I have I pointed out to the district surveyor the course which I wish the pipes to take if the Board will allow to lay them.

I am yours truly,

J. B Jude.

A letter was read from Mr.White stating that was unable attend the Board as he had promised do to give his sanction to Mr Jude's application, but he desired to give his sanction in writing After brief discussion Mr Cole proposed and Mr Woollett seconded that the application be granted, so far the Board had power to do so subject to Mr. Jude reinstating the road where it may be disturbed, and keeping the same in repair as directed by the Board's Surveyor.
