Parish Council Meeting on January 11th 1916 at Church Rooms. Present Messrs. Blest, English, Cheeseman, Tapply, Canon Livett, Sharpe. Plan of Cemetry produced and location of future burials agreed; no graves to be dug deeper than 6 ft; no application for post of grave-digger following death of H. Hook1. Canon Livett requested to propose a job description and then clerk to send to Henry Marlin of Queen’s Head asking him to do at salary of £12 p.a. (£4 for 2 summer quarters and £2 for two winter quarters). Letter sent included specification for grave sizes (adult and child) and fees (adult 6s.; child 5s.- subject to further variation if depth not standard). Burial board to supply tools and digger to keep edges trim and do weeding. Digger to keep record by grave number of name and date of burial and depth plus an inventory of tools.

Parish Council meeting on March 30th at Church Rooms at 7.45 p.m. Present Messrs. Blest, Canon Livett, Tapply, Sharpe, Cheeseman, English and Baker. Approves payment of accounts (total £7.17s. 7d. plus £3.10.0.to Canon Livett with a balance at end of year of £38. 10s. 8d.)

Annual Meeting of Parish Council held at Church Rooms on April 13th 1916 at 7.50 p.m. Present: Messrs Blest, Canon Livett, Baker, English, Sharpe & Cheeseman. Form to approve grant of right of burial agreed and Livett to draft rules and fees. Note of thanks to Mr. J. Harris for his past services extending over many years.

Parish Council Meeting held at Church rooms on November 13th 1916 at 7.45 p.m. Present: Messrs Blest, Canon Livett, Cheeseman, English, Smith, Tapply, Sharpe, & Baker. Livett had not done what had agreed re burial rules and fees due to pressure of work. Memo received from Local Government Board re postponement of elections for a year under the Parliament and Elections Act 1916. Letter received from Road Surveyor requesting that hedge of the allotment overhanging Park Road should be cut back. Allotment committee to consider supplying a quantity of manure for the holders. Monument for Dr. J.W. Fry of Maidstone had been approved by vicar and erected. Door to “Lock up” (now let to KCC) to be repaired. Style and Wood charities :£1 (2x 10s.) in stamps advanced by vicar re scheme with Charity Commission; vicar to be repaid.

Notes:

1. Henry Hook, aged 69 was buried on 23rd December 1915. He lived at Cook's Cottages, Old Road with his wife Mary who had had by 1911 9 children of whom 8 were still alive. One son was also called Henry.
