In 1617 William Twisden, the owner of both Westburies [Westbury] and Chart Manors in Wateringbury, received from King James Free Warren in respect of both these manors and in several other surrounding areas he owned. The grant is documented in a large (and extensive) Latin language document held in Kent Archives, reference U48/T46.

Free Warren was the right to hunt animals, a right which was otherwise reserved as a right of the crown.
